Picasa for Mac

Picasa for Mac

Beta, naturally.

Now I see what I’ve been missing from iPhoto all these years: ‘teh snappy’.

I think I still prefer the feel of iPhoto, though. Like most Google things, it feels somehow messier.

But, my oh my, is it ever snappy. Hopefully this will light a fire under Apple.

For a limited time only (I’m guessing), the download apparently doesn’t come with a forced install of Google’s fascist software updater. ( Edit : this is incorrect.)

Free Radical Design closes doors

What a shame. I was looking forward to the next TimeSplitters, which is the spiritual successor to the classic GoldenEye 007.

Wii Speak: The Deal

Wii Speak: The Deal

Nintendo:

Any consumer who requires a Wii Download Ticket after purchasing a pre-owned Wii Speak Accessory may contact their local Nintendo Customer Services department, where they can request a Wii Download Ticket for the Wii Speak Channel for free.

Finally, we got that cleared up. It’s nice that there are still places that practise journalism by, y’know, asking questions if something isn’t clear.

rant ive been seeing this more and more lately

Rant:

I’ve been seeing this more and more lately: misuse of the phrase ‘reserve the right’.

It means that you’re choosing to exercise a right which you already had, which is presumably not necessary to even notify the other party of–because it is your right. This is not the case in the above; nowhere in law does it say that a retailer has the right to charge me $5.00 basically whenever they feel like it.

What they can do is specify the terms of sale beforehand, which the customer is free to accept or reject. Again, it is not a right of the vendor to charge whatever they feel like whenever they want for whatever they want; these are terms that both parties must find mutually agreeable before proceeding.

This may seem like a trivial distinction, but it speaks volumes about their corporate culture. It was so irritatingly pretentious to me that I decided not to complete the transaction. As if I really need one more reason not to give patronage to that awful corporation.

Wegmans introduces a new logo

I miss the old one. It was an institution. The new one seems a bit too fancy. Maybe that’s what they were going for, though. Further reading.

Apple or Nintendo?

Apple or Nintendo?

Apple’s Greg Joswiak:

The PSP and DS represent the old school of gaming: big bulky devices with an old-fashioned distribution model.

The second part of this is simply false. Sony has been selling PSP games as downloads through their PlayStation Store for months now. Nintendo will soon be doing the same with DSi.

Because again the computer power and the 3D graphic power here [iPod Touch] is significantly greater than what you have here [picks up Nintendo DS]. So this allows people to do significantly higher quality games.

Weasel words. Maybe it ‘allows’ for that, but it isn’t happening. Video game consoles have been around a while now, and the companies who have perched on their high horses and proclaimed their technical superiority as the #1 selling point are the ones who have lost.

It’s all about the software, stupid. I always have my iPod touch with me, and yet if I want to play a game when I go somewhere, I have to take my DS or PSP with me. Why is that? Maybe they’ll figure it out. Maybe not.

OTOH, Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aimé:

Whether you chose to play on your DS or listen to music on your iPod, we’re already in the same competitive space for time.

Despite being the clear market leader in the games space, they’re not becoming complacent.

I guess Apple’s ’funnest iPod ever’ should watch out, because apparently the G1 Phone is ’funnerer’. Also, grammarians may want to cover their eyes. Oops, too late.
